I think when a player joins the server part of the starter kit should be a book explaining how towns, getting money, and other basic things work in the server so that they feel more informed about the server and also so that they don't have to rely solely upon other members of the server to get started. Currently one joins the server for the first time in the middle of nowhere and unable to break blocks because the area around spawn isn't communal. This is bad in terms of game design wherein the first thing a person does should be Intuitive from what they see. While the spawn is pretty it is badly designed in a gameplay sense. One can even get stuck in spawn if one doesn't know the warp command and fall off the walkways into the pit below spawn. By adding a book which is coherently written (or even multiple in several languages if there are staff capable of scribing translations) I believe we can reduce confusion of new players dramatically as well as make the server a more inviting place. Minecraft is after all a game and servers which wish to appeal to the most people should incorporate game design thinking and have a tutorial at the start. TL/DR: We should give players who join for the first time one or multiple books describing the basic things to do on the server so that they can begin to play immediately without help. These books would ideally be in a few languages so people who have English as a second language feel more comfortable reading them.
